Room envy // Carrie’s Sex and the city apartment

May 28, 2010

Like many girls I’m a little bit obsessed with Sex and the City – I’ve watched every episode about three times and I’m long overdue to watch them all again! Although I was a bit disappointed with the storyline of the first film I’m looking forward to the second one, and all the wonderful fashion and adventures it promises to bring. And being an interior design geek too, when I saw this article over at Elle Decor about the stylish sets used in the film I had to share it with you all.

“I’ve been cheating on fashion with furniture,” Carrie reportedly says at the beginning of the new movie, so we know we’re in for a visual feast with the interior design of Carrie and Big’s first home together. Although the overall style isn’t to my taste – being a little too polished and traditional for me (especially the bedroom), it definitely shows a fusion of Carrie and Big that works really well, and there are some ideas that I really love and a few quirky touches to remind us of Carrie’s fun style.

For starters – the wallpaper and mirror in the top image – just amazing. Wallpaper can be such a tricky thing to get right, don’t you think? But this beautiful design and subtle golden colour, made to glow by the matching lamps, creates a stunning wall in true Carrie-style. The vibrant butterflies in the glass cloche on the sideboard add a fun touch, as does the bird-print fabric cushion in the second image – which I’ve had my eye on for a while and is by Paul Smith for The Rug Company.

What a statement that chandelier makes? I love it. It’s made from oxidised metal and I reckon could be pretty simple to make with the correct tools… hmmm, I might get Gav onto that! The candlesticks could either be expensive designer crystal or cheapo second-hand glass – and I love the idea that you can’t tell and it really doesn’t matter anyway. I like the splashes of colour from the casually styled glass and ceramic on the shelves, but the polished mahogany dining table and classically upholstered chairs are a little too formal for me.

I don’t have much to say about the bedroom. Nothing excites me – I don’t like high beds and the overall design feels a little stuffy. What do you think?

The closet. Oh the closet! My entire wardrobe would fit into one of those teeny drawers but I dream of having lots of lovely clothes to fill a wonderful walk-in closet. Still, I prefer the one in her old apartment – more jumbled and less polished!

What do you think about Carrie’s new pad? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Overall, I think the set designers have done a great job in demonstrating how Carrie has evolved from single gal about town to grown-up married lady. Interestingly, I think Big’s flashy, designer style is very apparent and I wonder how different Carrie’s apartment would be if she ended up with Aiden… who knows, maybe we’ll find out!

Thanks for the peak! Overall I like the styling, although i agree some things feel a little stuffy and more Big than Carrie.
Have you seen the movie yet, what did you think? I was a little disappointed – felt more about fashion than the girls themselves!

Oh I love it! Especially the wall paper, blue couch and tiles in the kitchen. And what I would do for a closet like that? Oh well, we can carry on dreaming!
